Ondoy wrecked havoc to Metro Manila last week — killing more than 200 people and leaving thousands of families homeless.

But amid the tragedy, stories of heroism, generosity and compassion flooded the nation’s capital. People who had nothing much to give, gave nonetheless. Students volunteered their time to help pack the relief goods. Private companies donated canned goods, medicine, water and other necessities. Relief came all over the nation — and from Filipinos and friends worldwide.

Sabi nila sanay na daw ang Pilipinas sa trahedya kaya mabilis ang pagtulong. Hindi ako naniniwala doon. Mabilis kaming kumilos dahil ang Pilipino ay sadyang matulungin. Mabilis kaming kumilos, dahil sa bayan namen, may tunay na bayanihan.

What happened the last week was bayanihan at its finest. Come hell or high water — gagawin ng Pinoy ang dapat gawin para makatulong. Yan ang Pinoy.

I had her when she was barely 2 months old — given to me by my best friend, Jaime. As a puppy, she slept in a little rattan basket that we prepared for her. It had mats to keep her warm and comfy while she slept. As she grew bigger– and learned to jump into my bed — she developed a habit of sleeping beside me.

She kept me company while I read, wrote stuff on my journal and watched tv till I fell asleep. She was fiercely loyal. And brave. She was the only dog I had who did not seek cover during the New Year’s Eve.

I had her for eight years until she finally breathed her last on 24 August of this year. It had been a beautiful friendship and I thank her for the company she gave me over the years.

I miss her terribly.

Dogs’ lives are too short. Their only fault, really.

Sorry about the month-long hiatus, folks. Been extremely busy with work lately. During the last couple of weeks, all of us in our team was drowning in work. Buti na lang talaga I love the people I work with. They make work worth doing.

Lately, 24 hours seemed to be always kulang. And since something always has to give, this blog had to be it.

But thanks to the sunod-sunod long weekends, I’ve finally decided to revive this blog.

Yes, it is in a different URL now — decided to give up my own domain and just use ol’ reliable wordpress.

Sorry to have kept you waiting. Here’s to more blog posts!!!

The best part about weddings is spending time with my cousins based in the US and elsewhere.

Pat, Raphie and me at GB5 — this time for Arlo and Kay’s wedding this year

Joel and I having dinner with Caloy, Patrick, the Tani brothers and their lovely wives at Seaside Macapagal. Among others, we consumed 3 1/2 kilos of crabs, 1 kilo of shrimp, and another kilo of squid, halaan and tilapia among the eight of us that night. Perfect way to celebrate Patrick’s birthday, methinks.

I had a blast growing up. And i think that is mostly because I grew up in the company of my cousins.

I learned how to ride a bike with Mike and played doll with Kay, Anna, Raphie and Clarisse almost every afternoon. I learned the mechanics of text and taguan by playing with Jerome, Joseph, Gab, Arlo and Tan. Got my hands dirty and learned how to create my own garage by playing with Matchbox cars in the compound. Footlong also had the patience to teach me how to play ball — much to my lola’s dismay, ofcourse.

We also had our fair share of awayans. And sometimes we pretended to fight with each other just so Tita Mita can offer free merienda as an incentive to settle our “disagreements”.

And how can I forget our yearly carolings? For nine evenings, we would pester residents in the compound by singing the same Carols every single night — hoping against hope that we accumulate enough money to buy us merienda (Coke, hopia and tinapay) for one week.

Ahh, the simple joys of childhood.

Kay and Arlo

Last year it was Gab and Michael who tied the knot.

This year, it’s Arlo’s turn and my gosh, it was such a beautiful, beautiful wedding. Sure they had lots of guests but they were able to maintain the solemnity and elegance of the event.

I also like how they “personalized” their wedding (by naming the tables after restaurants they frequent in NY, by personalizing their gifts for the ninongs and ninangs, by giving the guests little placards with the guests names and their respective tables, etc). It’s amazing how they were able to put so much detail to their wedding when they were both busy working in the US!!! Thank God for efficient coordinators, huh!
